1. Are multiple formal alliances possible?
2. If I am in formal alliances with two other players, do they automatically form an alliance with each other?

Yes

2. If I am in formal alliances with two other players, do they automatically form an alliance with each other?

No. They will fight normally everywhere that they encounter each other, except be peaceful towards each other when visiting your empire. They will both help to defend your stars.
