Can we have a tab in the messages screen which shows all unread messages (diplomacy and events) ordered with the oldest first?
If the two message types cannot be combined then just show the events.
You mean hide the read messages and flip the list upside down?
Yes
It would also be nice to be able to mark a message unread. I sometimes look at diplomacy on my phone and want to remember to look again when I get to a proper computer.

Big Thumbs up on that suggestion - ditto the Event Log as it helps me remember when someone sends me Tech that I need to reciprocate on.
