Formal alliance ending attacks

if my ships are on the planet of someone i’m allied with, and we end our formal alliance. does battle happen on that planet the second the alliance ends?

do the ships stay ontop of the allied planet they are at when alliance ends, or are they booted off to my nearest planet? like a retreat

Nothing happens until the carrier moves. So it’ll just sit there, but if you visit the star with it combat will happen, or you can fly away and avoid combat.
