The game tracks hostility before the AI takes over so that it kind of knows the political situation when it does.

Yes, but not for a few turns. It must track “hostility” with a longer history than a production cycle or two?

Hmm. Seems to work OK for most, but the “false negative” when you’ve recently ceased hostilities or even actively (but not formally) allied with a player can be pretty rough. No different than a quick betrayal by an active player I suppose.

Sorry for digging this up now, but please keep in mind: Players often “bump into each other” while their scanning ranges are not long enough to see each other arriving at the same star. IMO there should be a way not to interpret this as hostility later on for the calculation of AI behavior!
